Toto Books

A storybook starring your little one.

Every story needs someone at the middle of it. Yours is asleep down the hall.

Send us a photo. We draw your child into a twelve-spread adventure, print it as a hardcover and post it to your door.

Drag the edge across.

It has to look like them. Or it isn't their book.

We draw your child once, from your photo, and show you before anything else happens — from the front, from the side, running. Nothing else is made until you have said yes to that drawing.

Then it is the drawing on every page. The child on page eleven is the child on page one, in the same shirt, with the same hair.

Pick what the story is about.

Every Toto book is built around one idea. Take one of ours, or write your own in a sentence — a first day, a fear, a habit you have been working on since spring.

A spread from a finished book: the felt boy in his bedroom at night, lamp on, not frightened
“Brave in the dark”, made for a four-year-old in Porto.

Something they are learning

  • first day at nursery
  • sleeping in their own room
  • brushing teeth
  • learning to ride a bike
  • a new baby at home

Something they are becoming

  • brave in the dark
  • honest when it is hard
  • patient
  • kind to the smaller ones
  • able to say sorry
  • …or write your own

Four books. Four different stories.

Each one starts from a different child's photo, in the style their parent chose. And your child does not have to be the one at the centre of it — the family dog works just as well, and so does a drawing they made and refuse to throw away.

A watercolour spread: a small boy on the deck of a sailing ship at sunset with a parrot and a message in a bottle

Learning to be brave

A treasure hunt that goes wrong first. Soft watercolour.

A modelled three-dimensional spread: two children on a forest path with a red squirrel

A first big walk

The bridge over the stream, and back before dark. Modelled 3-D.

A needle-felt spread at night: a brown and white dog nose to nose with a firefly, turtles watching

The family dog as the hero

Made for a boy who wanted the book to be about his dog, not himself. Needle-felt.

A spread in ink and gouache: a shaggy black creature at a round window, holding a small glowing star

Afraid of the dark

The monster turns out to have been lonely. Ink and gouache.

How it works. About ten minutes of your time.

Twelve spreads, all yours to change

Every picture and every line can be changed before you pay a cent. The art style too — this one is needle-felt.

What happens to your photos

We use them to draw your child and for nothing else. We never sell them or share them, and they are deleted the moment you ask.

“The first time he saw himself in the story he went completely quiet. Then he made me read it four times before bed.”
